About us
Our names are Rob and Lowri Harris. We moved here on December 18th 2013 on the night of severe flooding in Carmarthenshire. On our first night Rob broke down with the last trailer load including our cat Angel, our miniature Pinscher Blake and our Doberman Caradog after hitting a substantial amount of water. I will always remember our boys Ioan, Cai and myself wading through the water to get to the bridge to cross the ford looking for him. Thankfully a nearby 4x4 pulled him out of the water and luckily his car was ok. We returned to the house soaking and smelling but laughing and happy. We were keen to get some animals immediately. We started off with 6 black rock hens. This started our obsession with chickens. We rescued quite a few and then bought in a few more. We then bid for a pair ofWelsh Harlequin ducks in our local auction and won. We hatched a few of their eggs, a process the boys loved and kept the females. We currently have 22 hens,a cockerel, 4 ducks and a drake. We then moved on to some sheep. My friends dad owns a farm and we asked if we could buy some ewes from him. He agreed so we bought three. We were keen to breed some lambs and he kindly let a ram run with them for a few weeks. In March 2013 we watched our first lambs being born. The experience was and still is amazing. Watching new life being born is magical. In 2014 we bought 10 from him and decided as we were a smallholding we could afford to buy some pedigree sheep. We wanted to keep a Welsh connection as much as possible and decided on some Lleyn sheep. We purchased 5 ewes in lamb and are hoping to build up our own stock from these. During this time we bought 3 Murray Grey Heifers. We first saw the Murray Grey at the Spring Festival and thought their colouring and temperament was wonderful. We found out that they finish on grass and hay alone, which suited us as we didn't want to be paying loads out on extra food. Wendy Finnacue kindly put two to a bull and we are looking forward to watching our first calfs being born. We are waiting for our first Berkshire pigs at present. Our plan for the future is to continue to grow our stock of Murray Greys, Lleyn sheep and hopefully Berkshire pigs. We want to be able to produce slow growing, tasty meat where the animals have a fantastic, happy life. |
